Cadence, long form and reading the numbers.

Do you need long form?

Two doors into the Partner Programme, one bridge between formats, and an honest answer about when a longer video is worth the effort.

Abstract

A Shorts channel can reach the YouTube Partner Programme without ever publishing a long video, because there are two separate doors: one counted in Shorts views and one counted in long-form watch hours. This paper sets out both doors as they stand today and as YouTube has announced them from 1 February 2027, explains why Shorts do not hold back long-form recommendations, shows how the Related video link joins the two formats, and gives our advice on when adding long form is worth it and when it is a distraction.

Key findings

  1. Today a channel can qualify for the full Partner Programme through Shorts views alone, without a single long video.
  2. YouTube has announced higher thresholds for new applicants and a separate Shorts revenue minimum, both effective from 1 February 2027.
  3. YouTube states that Shorts performance does not hurt the recommendations of your long-form videos.
  4. The Related video link is the official bridge from a Short to a longer piece, and it needs advanced feature access.
  5. Long form is worth adding when your subject has more to say than a Short can hold, not because a rule demands it.

§1Two doors into the same programme

The question usually arrives as a worry: someone has a Shorts channel that is starting to move, and a friend tells them that real channels make long videos and that YouTube will never pay a Shorts-only creator. The first half of that is a matter of taste. The second half is simply not how the Partner Programme is written.

Today, full membership of the programme, the tier that shares ad and Premium revenue, asks for 1,000 subscribers and then one of two things: 4,000 qualified public watch hours on long-form videos in the last 12 months, or 10 million qualified public Shorts views in the last 90 days12. Those are two doors into the same room. A channel that only publishes Shorts walks through the second one, and nothing in the rules asks it to also open the first.

The doors do not mix. Watch hours earned in the Shorts feed do not count toward the 4,000-hour long-form path1, so you cannot fill the long-form door with Short views and hope the totals meet in the middle. Pick the door your channel actually walks through, and measure progress in that door's unit.

There is also a lower tier for fan funding, channel memberships and Shopping. It asks for 500 subscribers, 3 public uploads in the last 90 days, and either 3,000 qualified watch hours in 12 months or 3 million qualified Shorts views in 90 days, along with being 18 or over, living in an eligible country and not making content for kids2. It is a real first step, though it does not include the Shorts revenue share.

§2What changes on 1 February 2027

In August 2026 YouTube announced a set of changes to the programme that take effect from 1 February 202734. They are announced, not yet live, and anyone planning a channel over the next year should read them now rather than discover them later.

  • New applicants from that date need 1,000 subscribers and either 8,000 qualified watch hours in 365 days or 20 million qualified Shorts views in 90 days34. Both doors stay open; each gets taller.
  • A Shorts revenue minimum: to share in Shorts ad and subscription revenue, a channel will need 10 million qualified Shorts views in the last 90 days. Below it the channel stays in the programme and keeps its long-form earnings, and Shorts sharing resumes automatically once it crosses the line again34.
  • An activity standard: a member counts as active with 1,000 qualified watch hours in 365 days, or 1 million qualified Shorts views in 90 days, or by uploading 2 long-form videos or 5 Shorts every 90 days. A channel that falls below it gets an extra 90-day window3.
  • Existing members are not affected by the new entry thresholds, and the fan funding and Shopping thresholds are unchanged34. Members do need to accept the updated terms in YouTube Studio by 31 January 2027, or earning from the affected features stops until they do3.

Notice what the new rules do and do not say. They raise the bar for Shorts, but they raise the long-form bar too, so neither door becomes the easy one. And the activity standard can be met with Shorts alone: five Shorts every 90 days keeps a channel active even if it never makes a long video. The changes reward channels that keep publishing and keep being watched, in whichever format they chose.

RuleGet the numbers right

Today, 10 million Shorts views in 90 days is one of the ways into the full programme. From 1 February 2027, new applicants need 20 million, and 10 million becomes the separate minimum for sharing in Shorts revenue13. "YouTube needs 10 million views" without a date is the sentence that confuses people.

§3Shorts do not hold back your long videos

A second worry keeps creators away from mixing formats: the idea that a channel full of Shorts teaches YouTube to show its long videos less. YouTube addresses this directly. In its own words, Shorts performance does not negatively affect long-form recommendations; Shorts can help with audience discovery but cannot hurt your video performance5.

YouTube also says that an individual video's underperformance does not penalise a channel overall, and that what creators feel as a format penalty usually comes from how viewers react to a new format rather than from the system punishing the channel6. Viewers' preferences vary by format, and someone who watches your long videos may also be shown your Shorts6. So the system treats each format on its own merits. That is good news and also a warning: a long video still has to earn its own audience, and it will not ride on the back of your Shorts automatically.

MythMyth: Shorts poison a long-form channel

YouTube's own guidance says Shorts can help with discovery and cannot hurt long-form performance5. If a long video underperforms after a run of Shorts, the likelier reason is that the audience the Shorts found was not looking for that long video.

§4The bridge: a Related video link

If you do make longer pieces, YouTube gives you one clean way to connect them to your Shorts. Each Short can carry a Related video link, shown as a clickable link under your channel handle while the Short plays. You set it in YouTube Studio on a computer: open Content, choose the Short and pick the Related video. It can point to a long video, another Short or a live stream, as long as the target is public or unlisted. The feature is only available with advanced feature access7.

YouTube's own guide on turning Shorts views into long-form growth adds two practical points. Put a spoken and visual call to action in the last five seconds of the Short, and make sure the first 5 to 10 seconds of the long video address the promise the Short made, without a slow logo or a long intro in the way8. The viewer who taps the link is following a thread. If the long video opens somewhere else, the thread snaps.

Picture a Short about the night a city's harbour froze solid and people walked across it. It ends with a line such as "the full story of that winter is linked below", and the Related video points to a twelve-minute piece whose first seconds pick up exactly there, on the ice. That is the whole bridge: one promise, kept on both sides.

§5When long form is worth it, and when it is not

What follows is our advice, not a rule from YouTube. A sensible way to decide is to ask what your subjects want to be. Some topics are complete in forty seconds: one surprising fact, one image, one turn. Others keep producing questions after the Short ends, and you can see it in the comments, where viewers ask what happened next or why. Those are the topics that can carry a longer piece.

  • Add long form when the comments under your Shorts keep asking for more, when a subject has a real arc with causes and consequences, and when you can make the longer piece well enough that you would watch it yourself.
  • Stay with Shorts when your strength is the single sharp fact, when a long video would be your Short stretched out with filler, or when making it would cut your Shorts schedule in half.
  • Do both gradually when one in every handful of Shorts clearly has more story behind it. A long piece every few weeks, linked from the Shorts that set it up, is a modest and honest test.

Keep the format rule in mind while you plan. YouTube treats a square or vertical video of up to three minutes as a Short, and suggests a wider frame such as 16:9 if you want a video to stay long-form9. A three-minute vertical explainer is still a Short, whatever you call it.

§6A simple bridge plan, and where ViewMade fits

ViewMade can help in both directions. Going from long to short, the Clip it arm of the Studio takes a link to a long video, finds its strongest moments and cuts them into captioned vertical clips, so a long piece you already own can feed your Shorts shelf. Use it on videos you have the rights to, ideally your own. Going from short to long, a researched Short from the Studio is built around one specific subject, which makes it a natural trailer: its closing line can point to the longer piece, and you attach the Related video link yourself in YouTube Studio when you upload. ViewMade never uploads for you; you download the finished files and publish them on your own channel.

  1. Choose your door

Decide whether your channel is heading for the Shorts views door or the watch hours door, and track progress in that unit only. Note the 1 February 2027 changes if you will apply after that date.

  2. Find a subject with more story

Look through your best Shorts and their comments for one subject that viewers wanted to know more about. That is your first long piece.

  3. Make the long piece open on the promise

Write its first 5 to 10 seconds to continue exactly where the Short left off, with no slow intro in the way.

  4. Make or clip three Shorts that set it up

Produce researched Shorts on different angles of the same subject, or clip strong moments from the long piece with the Studio's Clip it arm. Each one ends with a short spoken and on-screen pointer to the full story.

  5. Link and watch

In YouTube Studio on a computer, set each Short's Related video to the long piece. After a few weeks, look at whether the long piece is finding viewers, and decide whether to repeat the cycle or stay with Shorts.

ViewMadeOne subject, two formats

Start a researched Short in the Studio on the subject you want to bridge, or paste a link to your own long video into Clip it. Both come back as finished vertical files with captions, ready for you to upload and link.
