How this list is organised
Most "best AI video generator" pages are sales pages wearing a listicle costume: the publisher's own product sits at number one, competitors fill slots two through ten, and the ordering exists to sell. We did not order this list because there is no single best answer. A publisher cutting clips from an existing long-form video needs a different tool than one producing vertical documentaries from scratch. The table below groups tools by their actual job, taken from our own audited comparison of each product's behaviour as of August 2026.

Prices were pulled directly from each vendor's pricing page without executing JavaScript, on 23 August 2026. AutoShorts, CapCut, StoryShort and Submagic render their prices client-side, so we could not verify them and wrote "Not measured" instead of inventing numbers.
When each one is the right answer
AutoShorts fits a publisher who wants scheduled output from a topic with minimal involvement. Visuals are generated, not sourced.
CapCut fits when the script and footage already exist and the job is assembly and editing.
Descript fits editorial teams working around a recording who want the deepest editing control of any tool here. At $24/month for the Hobbyist plan on monthly billing, it is also competitively priced against tools that do far less.
HeyGen fits a publisher who needs a presenter on camera without booking a camera. Output combines an avatar with supplied media.
InVideo fits broad general-purpose generation from a prompt, mixing generation with stock footage. Its traffic, 6,846,906 visits in July 2026, makes it the largest site in this category by reach.
Opus Clip fits repurposing: finding clips inside a long video you already made. It is the only tool in this table with a free tier, and the trial does not require a card.
Pictory fits turning an article or script into a stock-footage video, which maps directly onto publishers sitting on written archives.
Revid fits high-volume short-form output where generated visuals are acceptable. Entry is $39/month on the Hobby plan.
StoryShort fits topic-to-video production using web-sourced imagery. Its citation of sources is partial rather than full. On the commercial side, it ranks outside the top 12 for 14 of 15 tested commercial queries as of 19 August 2026, which matters if you are evaluating it as a long-term partner.

ViewMade fits vertical documentaries about real events. It sources real archive footage, maps and charts instead of generating visuals, and ships a media credits file naming the source of every clip with every render. Its YouTube connection requests read-only access only; the access token is discarded after import and the tool cannot upload, edit, delete or comment on your channel.
What none of them do
No tool in this table produces a fully sourced documentary Short end to end except ViewMade, and even then the honest limitation is scope: these are vertical Shorts built from archive material, not long-form broadcast documentaries. If your requirement is original reporting with interviews, none of these tools substitute for a production team. If your requirement is guaranteed rights clearance on every frame, a media credits file names sources but does not replace your own legal review of licences. And if your metric is raw traffic scale, every tool here except InVideo, vidIQ-scale platforms aside, operates well under a million monthly visits, so none of them carries network effects that transfer to your channel. Publishers should pick by job fit, not by any ranking, including ours.

Do any of these tools use real footage instead of AI-generated visuals?
Three do, in different ways. Pictory draws from a stock library. StoryShort uses web-sourced imagery but cites sources only partially. ViewMade uses real archive footage, maps and charts and includes a media credits file naming each clip's source with every render.
Can any of these publish directly to my YouTube channel?
None of them publishes for you in the workflow described here. ViewMade asks only for read-only YouTube access to import context, discards the access token after import, and cannot upload, edit, delete or comment. You download the finished package and publish it yourself.
Why are some prices listed as "Not measured"?
AutoShorts, CapCut, StoryShort and Submagic load their pricing through JavaScript after the initial page load. Our measurement method pulls pricing pages over plain HTTP without running scripts, so those figures did not appear. Rather than estimate, we left the cells empty of numbers.
