Best AI video generator with an API

In a measurement taken on 19 August 2026, StoryShort did not appear in the top 12 for 14 of 15 commercial queries tested; its single exception was a 4th

ViewMade starts at $29 a month. Of the 22 rivals tracked here, 9 publish an entry price a plain page fetch can read, and those, with ours, run from $10 to $149.

Entry prices read directly from each vendor's pricing page on 2026-08-23. Each mark is one reading, the shaded band is the range they fall in, and the mark below the axis is the middle. Further right costs more to start.

In a measurement taken on 19 August 2026, StoryShort did not appear in the top 12 for 14 of 15 commercial queries tested; its single exception was a 4th place ranking for "text to brainrot". This list organises tools by what they are built to do, and it is not ranked.

How this list is organised

This list is not a ranking. Every "best" page in this category is a sales page dressed as a listicle, and readers filter that out immediately. Instead of ordering tools by a score we invented, we state what each tool is built for, where its footage comes from, and where its price starts. Which one fits your work depends on your work.

ViewMade appears on this list, and there is no neutrality claim here: this page was written by ViewMade. The difference is that every comparison also states where a competitor genuinely wins, and no number appears unless it exists in our evidence bank. Anything we could not measure is marked "Not measured". That is also why we do not rank: a ranking would require invented precision on criteria we did not measure.

Prices were measured by direct HTTP fetch of each tool's own pricing page, without running JavaScript, on 23 August 2026. AutoShorts, CapCut and StoryShort return prices only after JavaScript runs, so their cells read "Not measured". StoryShort's tiers of $39, $69, $129 and $199 are known from another source dated 18 August 2026, but because they were not verified on the pricing page itself they are not printed here.

When each one is the right answer

AutoShorts. You want scheduled, hands-off publishing from a topic. Hand over the pipeline and let it run.

CapCut. You already have a script and clips and need to edit them. You supply all footage yourself.

Descript. You are editing around a recording and want the most control. This is the strongest fit for recording-based workflows.

HeyGen. You need a presenter on camera without a camera. It builds the presenter from an avatar plus media you supply.

InVideo. You want broad general-purpose generation from a prompt. It mixes generated and stock footage.

Opus Clip. You have a long video and want short clips extracted from it. It is built for that job, not for making a video from a topic.

Pictory. You have an article or script and want it turned into a stock-footage video. It works from a stock library.

Revid. You need high-volume short-form output and accept generated visuals. The Hobby plan costs $39 per month as measured on 23 August 2026.

StoryShort. You want a topic-to-video flow and web-sourced imagery is acceptable. It launched in August 2024, and TrustMRR's Stripe-verified data from 18 August 2026 recorded MRR of $20,864 and 370 active subscribers. Its affiliate programme pays a 30% lifetime recurring commission through Rewardful, and distribution is a visible part of its strategy. In Similarweb's July 2026 snapshot, 50.1% of its traffic was organic and the site held roughly 60,521 URLs, one of the largest page architectures in this category. These are real strengths: volume, organic reach and an established revenue base.

Submagic. You have an existing clip that needs captioning and polish. You bring the footage.

ViewMade. You want vertical documentary Shorts about real events, with a media credit file naming the source of every clip. Footage comes from real archives, maps and charts rather than a video model. API and MCP access is included on the Pro plan at $59 per month, or $29.50 per month equivalent billed annually. The YouTube connection requests read-only permission only; the access token is discarded after import, and ViewMade cannot upload, edit, delete or comment on your channel.

What none of them do

None of these tools answers well when the job is a verifiable documentary workflow where sources must be shown. Most tools in the table either edit material you supply or generate footage with a model. If you narrate a past event over generated imagery, the frames you show the viewer have no connection to the event, and none of these tools ships a mechanism that says so. In our audited comparison table, ViewMade is the only tool that provides a source credit file, StoryShort provides partial credits, and every other measured tool reads "no" or "na". For unmeasured tools we write nothing into that cell. If your need is editing control, an avatar, or clip extraction from a long video, another tool on this list is the correct answer.

Frequently asked questions

Which of these tools has a documented API?

In our audited comparison table, ViewMade is the only tool with documented API access; API and MCP access is included on the Pro plan at $59 per month, or $29.50 per month equivalent billed annually. We make no claim about the other tools' APIs because we did not measure them.

What does footage source mean and why does it matter?

It states where the video's visuals come from: generated by a model, pulled from a stock library, sourced from the web, supplied by you, or drawn from real archives. For content about past events the difference is large, because a generated frame is not evidence of the event.

Why are some prices marked "Not measured"?

We measure each price by fetching the tool's own pricing page directly, without running JavaScript. Some sites render prices only in the browser; when that happens we cannot read the number, so we write nothing rather than invent one. The measurement date is 23 August 2026.

Is this list ranked by quality?

No. The tools do different jobs: one edits recordings, one finds clips inside long videos, one turns a topic into a video. The right answer depends on your task, and we wrote separately where each tool is strong.
