How this list is organised
This page does not rank tools from best to worst. Every "best tool" list in this category is ordered so that one product wins, and readers and search engines both discount them for it. Instead, each entry here states what the tool was built to do with footage you already have, and the table shows where its visuals come from.
ViewMade appears in this list because we make it. It belongs at the end, not the top: ViewMade builds vertical documentaries about real events from sourced research, not edits of your own clips. When each one is the right answer
CapCut fits when you have a script and clips ready and want direct control over cuts, timing, and effects without paying for a professional suite.
Descript fits when you have a recording and want the deepest level of control. You edit the video by editing the transcript, which suits interview and talking-head material where the words drive the structure.
Opus Clip fits when you already made a long video and want it broken into short-form candidates automatically rather than scrubbing through the timeline yourself.
Submagic fits when the edit is done and the remaining work is captions and polish on an existing clip before publishing.
ViewMade does not edit your footage at all. It takes a topic and produces a finished vertical documentary using real archive imagery, maps, and charts, with a media credit file naming the source of every clip. Use it when there is no footage of yours to edit, only a subject worth documenting.
What none of them do
None of these tools solve the problem of turning a real event into a documentary when you have no camera crew and no archive of your own. CapCut, Descript, Opus Clip, and Submagic all start from media you supply. If the event happened decades ago, or somewhere you cannot go, they have nothing to work with. ViewMade covers that case by drawing on real archive footage instead of generated visuals, but it cannot take your raw files and restructure them into an edit. A workflow that needs both, your own footage plus historical context, currently means two tools and manual assembly between them. No single product in this comparison closes that gap.
