Burned-in captions are subtitles rendered directly into the video frame itself, inside the category of subtitle delivery methods. Unlike sidecar files or platform-generated subtitles, they cannot be switched off, restyled by the viewer, or lost during upload. Every viewer sees identical text regardless of player, device, or platform settings.
Why it matters
If you do not understand this term, you may upload a video believing your captions will survive any export, then discover that a sidecar file was stripped or that the platform's auto-captions replaced your carefully timed text with errors. On Shorts and TikTok, where most viewing happens with sound off, missing or wrong captions can cut watch time sharply.
The second decision is styling. Because burned-in text is part of the pixels, you choose font, position, and color before rendering, not after. A caption style that reads well on a desktop monitor may sit behind platform UI elements on a phone. Testing placement before the final render avoids re-rendering.
