The other 22 either generate every frame with a video model, pull generic stock, or work on clips you upload yourself. This article explains what that split means for cost, credibility and workflow, based on our own reading of each product's pages rather than vendor claims.
The short answer
AI generated video is cheaper per clip and faster to scale; real archive footage is slower to source but carries a provenance that generated frames cannot fake. If your channel covers events that actually happened, such as disasters, wars, crimes or engineering failures, viewers and platforms increasingly check whether the imagery matches reality, and generated visuals are the weak point. If your content is fictional, stylised or abstract, generation is usually the right tool. The choice is about subject matter first and budget second.
Where each tool gets its images
We read every product's own pages without running JavaScript, then classified its visual source ourselves. This classification is our reading, not the vendor's claim. A product built on produced imagery counts as Generated even if the marketing never uses that phrase.

Two patterns stand out. First, only one tool in the category ships a media credit file naming where every clip came from. StoryShort does it partially. Second, nine of the 23 tools sit in the clipping-and-captioning group: they assume you already have footage, so the question of image origin belongs to you, not them. That is not a flaw, but it means they cannot answer this question for you.
What generated video costs compared with what it saves
Generation removes the search problem. Nobody has to find footage of an event that may have no surviving recording, clear licensing, or usable resolution. That is why the topic-to-video products all converged on generation: it works for any prompt at any volume.
The price side of the trade is visible in published plans we read on 23 August 2026. Revid's entry Hobby plan is $39 monthly. Virvid's Lite plan is $39 monthly. Faceless.so's Starter plan is $29 monthly, or $24 monthly billed yearly. Short.ai's Basic plan is $19 monthly billed yearly. Fluxnote's Rise plan is $10 monthly, the lowest entry point we measured. These plans buy speed and unlimited subject matter, because a model will depict anything.
What they do not buy is archival accuracy. A generated frame of the Hindenburg is a plausible invention, not a photograph. For channels in saturated documentary niches, that distinction is becoming a sorting mechanism between channels that cite and channels that approximate.
When real footage is the only defensible choice
Some subjects punish approximation. Aviation disaster explainers rely on crash investigation reports, cockpit voice transcripts and newsreel; a generated fuselage undermines the authority the script depends on. War history audiences notice wrong uniforms, wrong aircraft silhouettes and invented battlefields. Engineering failure breakdowns need the actual structure, because the argument is about what physically happened.
Our niche saturation measurements from 23 August 2026 show these audiences exist at scale. Aviation disasters scored demand 94 against saturation 85, an opportunity score of 62. Cold war scored demand 98, opportunity 62. Sports stories scored demand 100, opportunity 62. Engineering failures scored demand 98, opportunity 62. These are among the highest opportunity scores across the 60 niches we measured, and they are all niches where the imagery has a factual referent.
The practical test is simple: if a viewer could pause your video and ask "is that the actual event?", generated footage gives you no good answer. Archive footage answers with a citation.
How to decide for your own channel
Work through three questions in order.
- Does your subject have a visual record? Events after roughly 1900 usually do. Mythology, philosophy and abstract concepts do not, and generation suits them fine.
- Do you need volume or verifiability more? A daily automated channel optimises for volume, and generated pipelines like Faceless.so's scheduled posting or Short.ai's bulk templates serve that. A weekly documentary channel optimises for verifiability, and there the media credit file matters more than throughput.
- Who bears the licensing risk? Generated frames carry no third-party rights. Archive footage carries licence obligations, which is precisely why a tool should hand you the credit file listing each clip's origin instead of leaving you to reconstruct it after publication.
If you answered record, verifiability and yes, look specifically at whether the tool ships provenance with every render. What this does not tell you
We did not measure output quality, retention, watch time or revenue for any tool in this article. Our image-source classifications reflect how each product was built as of August 2026; vendors change architectures, and a tool classified here as Generated today may add stock libraries next quarter. The pricing figures come from single reads of public pricing pages on 23 August 2026, several of which render prices only through JavaScript, so some plans we could not read are absent rather than free. The niche scores are demand and saturation estimates from a keyword engine marked estimated=false, but they still describe search behaviour, not your channel's performance. We also did not test how YouTube or other platforms treat generated versus archival content; no platform policy measurement exists in our data, so we make no claim either way.

Does using AI generated footage hurt monetisation? We have no measurement linking visual source to monetisation outcomes, so we cannot give you a percentage or a policy verdict. What our data does show is structural: generated imagery cannot be cited, while archive footage can. Channels covering real events increasingly compete on citations, and a video whose every clip names its source has an audit trail a fully generated video lacks. Treat monetisation risk as unmeasured and decide based on your subject matter.
Is stock footage a middle ground? Yes, and two tools in our table use it. Pictory builds videos from a stock library and InVideo combines generation with stock. Stock solves the licensing problem with curated, cleared clips, but it shares generation's core weakness for factual subjects: a stock shot of an ocean is not footage of your specific shipwreck. For abstract or illustrative content, stock is often the cheapest defensible option.
Why do some pricing pages show nothing when I view source? Several vendors render prices client-side. We found StoryShort's pricing page returned 4 server-side words, AutoShorts returned 10, and CapCut returned 13 on 23 August 2026. Hooked's page returned 776 words containing no prices at all. Those numbers describe how the page is built, not the product, but they explain why independent price comparisons sometimes disagree: whoever ran JavaScript sees tiers that raw HTML hides.
Can I mix generated and real footage in one video? Nothing in our data prevents it, and the tooling supports it: clipping tools like Klap and Quso work on whatever you upload, while generation tools fill gaps. The operational question is bookkeeping. If part of your video is sourced and part is generated, your audience cannot tell which is which unless you label it. That labelling burden falls on you unless your production tool ships a credit file per render, which as of our August 2026 reading only one tool in this category does.
