The short answer

Framing archive footage for 9:16 means cutting a tall slice out of a wide image, and the slice has to follow the subject, not the center. Put the action or the face inside the central third of the original frame before you scale up, keep the safe margins free of burned-in text, and treat every clip as a separate cropping decision instead of applying one global zoom.
