What you get for it
The pricing page does not publish a per-video figure. There is no render count, no credit allocation, and no export-minute allowance listed for any Descript plan. That means the cost of a finished vertical video cannot be computed from the page itself. You pay for a seat and an editor, and the output volume depends entirely on your own time.

Pictory and ViewMade both produce a video from input you did not film. Descript does not: it assumes you already have footage or a recording to cut.
When staying put is the right call
Descript is genuinely better when your problem is editing rather than production. Its strength is working around a recording you already made, with more control over the timeline than any generation tool offers. If you record podcasts, interviews, or screen captures and want precise cuts, overdubs, and text-based editing on your own material, no topic-to-video tool replaces that workflow. It also makes sense if your output is long-form or multi-speaker content where you need frame-level decisions. Paying $16 a month for that control is reasonable. The expense complaint only holds if what you actually want is a finished Short from a topic, because then you are paying seat prices to do assembly work by hand.
