Thirty Shorts a month — roughly one a day — costs about $5.56 in compute. That is the median from our own production ledger, and it is almost certainly not what you will pay.
The gap between those two numbers is the whole subject of this article. Every tool in this category publishes a subscription price and none of them publishes a production cost, so the buyer has no way to tell which part of the bill is machines and which part is margin, queue, support and refunds.
Here is our side of it, with the caveat that this is a dated snapshot from one production path, not a category benchmark.
The compute number
Across 20 entries in the production cost ledger, one finished 40–60 second vertical documentary — research, script, narration, footage, captions, render — cost a mean of $0.18069 and a median of $0.185364. The cheapest was $0.019548, the most expensive $0.4143.
Multiply the median by thirty and a month of daily posting is $5.56 of compute. Multiply the ceiling by thirty and the same month is $12.43. Multiply the floor and it is $0.59.
That twenty-fold spread between floor and ceiling is the honest part, and it is why any single headline figure for this category is a marketing number. A straightforward subject with cached discovery sits near the bottom. A job that needs more footage candidates, more retries and more rejected material sits near the top. Planning a channel around the cheapest render is how people end up surprised.
What the machines cost versus what the plans charge

What we can say is which stages exist. A hand-built faceless workflow has to research the subject, write the script, generate or record narration, find footage that is both relevant and licensable, cut it to the narration, caption it, and write the metadata. Every one of those is a place where the month quietly stops being one-a-day.
The line nobody budgets: rework
A failed render is not a discount. It is a full second cost, in both money and hours.
This is the part of the bill that separates tools with controllable output from tools without it, and it never appears in a comparison table. What to check before committing

- Count your own hours honestly for one week before assuming the free stack is free.
- Check what happens to a failed job. Refunded, or charged?
