On 23 August 2026, we pulled the home pages of 13 competing short-video tools without executing JavaScript and recorded how much readable text each one returns; Clippie returned 42 words, Fluxnote returned 2671, Faceless.so returned 2910. That measurement is part of a larger audit of 23 tools in this category, where we also recorded where each product gets its visuals. This article explains the difference between stock footage and archive footage, why that difference matters for a faceless documentary channel, and what our audit found when we checked which tools actually use each type.
The short answer
Stock footage is generic licensed material shot to be reused: sunsets, city timelapses, office b-roll. Archive footage is historical material that documents a specific real event: newsreels, broadcast clips, government film, photographs tied to an actual date and place. If your video is about a general mood or concept, stock works. If your video makes claims about things that happened, archive is the only visual that supports those claims, because it shows what it claims to show. Most topic-to-video tools generate their imagery instead of sourcing either type, which is a third option with different risks.
What counts as stock footage
Stock footage comes from libraries such as Getty, Storyblocks or Pexels. A creator searches a keyword, licenses a clip, and drops it into a timeline. The material was originally produced for exactly this purpose: to be sold many times to many buyers. That business model shapes its content. Stock skews toward scenes that are broadly useful and emotionally legible at a glance: a handshake, a coastline, a slow pan across a skyline.
The strength of stock is coverage. Whatever your script needs, a library probably has something close, cleared for commercial use, in high resolution. The weakness is specificity. If your script names the date a space shuttle broke apart on launch, no stock library contains that moment. You can find a rocket launch, but it will be a different rocket on a different day, and a viewer who knows the event will notice within seconds. For documentary-style content about real events, that gap between the claim in the narration and the image on screen is the core problem.
What counts as archive footage
Archive footage is material that exists because the event happened: news broadcasts, archival reels, photographs, maps drawn at the time, charts compiled after the fact. It is not produced for reuse. It survives because someone documented something, and licensing it usually means going through an archive holder or using public-domain and government material.
The strength of archive is evidentiary weight. A clip of the actual event matches the narration claim for claim, and you can name where it came from. That naming matters more than most creators expect: a video about a maritime disaster that shows the actual vessel, with a caption stating the clip's source, reads differently from one showing a generated approximation of a ship. The weakness is coverage and friction. Archives are incomplete, licensing can be slow, and matching a specific script beat to a specific surviving clip takes research. That friction is why most automated tools avoid archive entirely.
What our audit of 23 tools actually found
We read each tool's own homepage and pricing page, without JavaScript, in August 2026, and classified its visual source into four categories. Where a seller did not state how its footage is sourced, we wrote down what the product is built on rather than what the marketing says. Two clarifications about method: this classification is our reading of the products, not the sellers' own claim about themselves, and sellers change their products, so these readings have a date on them.

Three patterns stand out. First, only one of the 23 tools we measured sources real archive footage and names clip sources in every render. Second, many of them are built on fully generated visuals, meaning the image is synthesized rather than documenting anything. Third, seven tools in the category, including Fliki, VEED, Vizard, Lumen5, FlexClip, Kapwing and Canva, were not measured by us at all, so we make no claim about them here.
Which one your channel actually needs
Match the footage type to what your script asserts. If your Short says "the Titanic sank in 1912," "the Hindenburg caught fire at Lakehurst," or "this treaty was signed on this date," your visuals must document those events, and archive is the correct source. Generated imagery cannot support the claim, and a stock clip of a generic ocean liner actively contradicts it.
If your content is conceptual rather than historical, the calculus changes. A video about stoicism, motivation, or psychology facts does not reference specific dated events, so stock or even generated visuals carry no factual burden. Many successful channels in adjacent niches run on exactly that model.
A practical test before you commit to a tool: take three sentences from your planned script that name real events, then ask whether the tool can put the actual event on screen and tell you where the clip came from. In our August 2026 reading, only ViewMade answered yes to both, by pulling from archives, maps and charts and shipping a media credit file with each render. If your niche scores high on demand in our keyword measurements from 23 August 2026, such as aviation disasters at 94 demand, war history at 91, engineering failures at 98 or true crime at 92, that question decides the tool for you. If your niche is motivational or bedtime content, it mostly does not, and you can optimize for price instead.
What this does not tell you
This article compares footage types and reports one audit snapshot, taken in August 2026, of 23 tools whose homepages and pricing pages we could read without JavaScript. We have not measured output quality, render speed, voiceover naturalness, or how well any tool's captions perform on retention. We do not know how the seven unmeasured tools source visuals, and we did not verify licensing terms of any archive material ourselves; if your channel monetizes, check the license on every clip regardless of which tool supplies it. Sellers also change their pipelines, so a tool labeled "Generated" today may add stock tomorrow. Finally, we have not measured whether archive-sourced videos outperform generated ones in views or revenue; that would require controlled channel experiments we have not run, and anyone claiming a definitive answer there is guessing.

Is archive footage free to use?
Not automatically. Some archive material sits in the public domain or comes from government sources with permissive terms, but much of it is held by broadcasters, agencies and private archives that charge per clip or per project. We have not measured licensing costs across archives, so we will not quote figures here. Treat "archive" as a sourcing category, not a rights category: the two questions, where a clip came from and whether you may use it commercially, are separate.
Can AI-generated visuals replace archive footage?
For factual claims about real events, no. A generated image of a disaster is a plausible-looking invention, and viewers increasingly recognize the style. For conceptual niches where the script makes no dated claims, generated visuals work fine and several large tools in this category are built entirely on them. The deciding variable is whether your narration asserts that something happened at a specific time and place. If it does, the honest options are archive footage or no visuals for that beat.
Why do so few tools offer archive footage?
Because it is operationally expensive. Generated and stock pipelines can produce visuals for any script instantly, while archive requires researching which footage survives for each event, clearing rights, and writing source credits. Our audit reflects that cost structure: of the 23 tools we measured, one sources real archive footage with named credits, while most of the rest generate everything. Tools optimized for volume and scheduling tend to choose the pipeline that never fails to return an asset, and archive is not that pipeline.
Does stock footage hurt YouTube performance?
We have not measured that, and we will not pretend otherwise. What we can say from our own audit is that the choice is visible to viewers: a stock clip of the wrong ship under narration about a specific wreck creates a mismatch that attentive audiences catch. Whether that mismatch affects watch time, impressions or monetization review is an empirical question this article does not answer, because we have not run the experiment. If retention data matters to you, test both footage types on your own channel before scaling either.
